Facebook’s Riff lets you make videos with friends cities apart
Facebook has introduced a new application called Riff. A way to create videos with friends even if they are cities apart. To start a video you will have to shoot a clip that can go up to 20 seconds and describe what it is about then post it on Riff. Anyone using the application is free to watch the videos but only your friends can add their clips to it.
This unique idea of creating videos can result in quite an interesting mash-up of clips. For instance a birthday video can be created effortlessly by adding new clips. A few featured videos like “An American in Paris Backstage” and “Adventures of Mr. Banana” are already becoming viral within the app.
Facebook’s Riff Product Manager Josh Miller says “The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially from there, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends you can share to Facebook or anywhere on the Internet.”
The app is one of many initiatives like Paper, Slingshot, Mentions, Rooms and Groups launched by Facebook. Facebook Creative Labs is trying different ideas which may or may not gain popularity but the company will gain in terms of the data collected through these applications.
Since other applications like Snapchat, Vine, Vyclone, JumpCam etc. are already offering similar features, Riff will have to push through them with the help of Facebook integration.
The idea behind the application started after the super-viral ALS videos where innumerable people took the ice-bucket challenge. The idea of follow up videos came due to the nominations that were a part of the challenge. Miller says it felt collaborative because you had to be tagged and tag others you wanted to challenge to donate to ALS research and/or get drenched.
The application will not allow users to upload videos from the gallery instead the user will only get a short countdown to shoot the video from within the app. There are no editing or multi-shot features provided as of now. The company claims that the idea behind the app is to create unpolished videos which are spontaneous.
