LOS ANGELES — An emotional Vin Diesel appeared to fight tears as he introduced Furious 7 during the action film’s world premiere Wednesday night.
The celebratory evening quickly turned into a tribute to Paul Walker, the star from the franchise who died in a car crash during a break from filming in November 2013.
“You know I am going to speak,” Vin Diesel said as he took the microphone at the front of the theater, He sighed loudly and paused to collect himself before speaking. “I’m going to tell you, last year it was really tough to come back to work.”
But Vin Diesel said the cast and director James Wan came together in the aftermath of Walker’s death. And the film was ultimately a tribute which will assist in continuing “the legacy of Paul.”
Vin Diesel said he hoped people appreciated the others in their midst. “Because you just don’t know if it’s the last time you’re going to see them,” he said.
An equally emotional producer Neal Moritz also addressed the audience, the piece of paper in his hand often shaking as he tried to compose himself.
“As you all know we lost someone very dear to us during the filming,” said Moritz. “Paul was the most decent, thoughtful, caring human being I have ever met. Losing him was a blow to all of us.”
Moritz said Walker would be proud of the final product which opens Friday.
“I know Paul is smiling down on us right now,” said Moritz. “We love you forever Paul. And you will always be a part of all of us.”
